Mrs. Hairy Woodpecker On The Old Sycamore Stump

Hairy Woodpeckers (Picoides villosus) look a lot like their close relative, the Downy Woodpecker (Picoides pubescens). They differ in size and markings.

Mrs. Hairy has her species' characteristic elongated bill. She is a frequent visitor to our yard and is a very busy little bird. Downy woodpeckers have shorter, stubbier bills.
